HOW to read your XBOX's EEPROM and GET the HDD KEY WITHOUT removing the chip Or Modding the XBOX By UNICRON First my story. Hi all, first I would like to say thanks to everyone who helped me with information and suggestions on the forums and to Llamma for the posting of this HOW TO guide. I hope it helps a lot of people who have had the same head ach I have about getting to the secret key to unlock the XBOX's Hard drive. My problem started when I purchased an XBOX off EBay for a cheap price, I knew in advance it was broken but the promise of fixing it myself was to be a challenge, and boy was it! Not that I couldn't do it after all I do have a paper that says I know how to fix electronics, even if I can't spell very well My package arrived and I tore into it, first thing taking the Xbox apart.

HOW to read your XBOX's EEPROM and GET the HDD KEY WITHOUT removing the chip. This will unlock your XBOX hard drive using the EEPROM.BIN file you copied to the.

Feb 18, 2012 I have a original xbox not the xbox360 and I need to. Can I get or download a copy of xbox v1.6. Where I can download the v1.6 xbox eeprom.bin? Softmodding an Xbox (For Free) Dale Swanson. The original Xbox can be turned into a media center that can play classic video games, videos and music.

Hum I thought didn't look like much, boy I thought it would be more like a computer motherboard, seeing how everyone says it's a computer basically. Well first thing I did was clean off the old paste on the CPU that cheap thermal paste, and replace it with high quality Arctic Silver paste.

Then I checked the board out for any signs of burnt traces or other fixable problems and found none. My next step was to check out the XBOX to see if she would power up. I plugged it in and with the push of the button it came on, with the flubber screen or whatever it is and booted up to a screen that said 'XBOX LIVE UPDATE, Please do not turn off the power until update is finished.' Great I thought I'll just plug it up to the network and let it do its thing, WOW this will be an easy fix. NOPE, it came up with a screen saying 'XBOX LIVE cannot connect at this time Please try again later', so I click OK to go on, after all I don't need to update XBOX live I'm not going to be on it anyways. I clicked OK and the screen went back to the XBOX LIVE UPDATER screen again, then it went to the cannot connect screen with the OK button. I click it and it just looped around again and again.

Well I thought this is grim, So I called Micro. Well you know who and they take four techs and 30 minutes to come up with the answer, throw it away and buy a XBOX 360!!!

Force Op 1.5.2 No Survey on this page. That’s your solution!! So I read around on the forums and find out there is some nice software (homebrew) that can clean the hard drive and restore it to 'new', so I am all up for that.

The problem I get though is all of them expect you to have Modded your XBOX or at least have the Hard Drive KEY (PASSWORD) to use them! Well I am in a pickle now seeing how I can't MOD the XBOX cause it won't boot a CD and only goes to that UPDATER screen. Man what to do. Then I find out the XBOX hard drive password is stored in an EEPROM on the board.

That’s when the light went on! Hey if the EEPROM isn't locked and I can read the contents I can get the hard drive password from it myself. Then I find out that the password is encrypted. Crap I think. I find out that there is a program that will give me the Password if I have the EEPROM.BIN file, (the EEPROM.BIN file is just a dump of the contents of the EEPROM) - which is what I was going to do anyways so that brings me to building the EEPROM READER. I built the reader and read the contents of my EEPROM in my XBOX and saved it as EEPROM.BIN, what else?

Then I used the program I had found and made my first XBOX recover CD. After that I was able to easily unlock my hard drive, and use a file browser to look around on it and fix the corrupted files on the drive (apparently someone had installed a soft mod and then somehow screwed it up pretty good) but I was able to copy the original XBOX backup files to the C drive. Afterward I installed the drive back into the XBOX and powered it on and it came up all happy in the Micro. Well Dash like a new XBOX!! THEN I found out the DVD drive didn't read. So I borrowed my buddies XBOX that was modded and FTP into it and copied his C drive and some files off of E drive then REMAKE the XBOX restore CD and wiped my drive clean and restored it with HIS XBOX hard drive files and now I have a happily modded XBOX.

›Aug 21, 2012. Re: EEPROM flashing. Post by whufclee » Tue Aug 21, 2012 4:56 pm. No unfortunately that would not work - eeproms aren't version specific they are actually xbox specific. Every xbox has it's own individual eeprom so that's why it's so important to back them up and not lose them. Oct 15, 2014 - 10 min - Uploaded by Slot1GamerDownload: Where do I get the original xbox dashboard files.I am aware that you can update an xbox 1.6 eeprom with configmagic.

My question is how does it work? I always thought that the xbox 1. 6 eeprom was unchangable due to it not having a tsop, making it essentially frozen in time. A few years ago, I wanted to change my xbox 1.6b hard disc key (which is stored in the eeprom), to match the one in my 1.6. So that all my saves from the 1.6 would work with the 1.6b (some saves are signed by the hard disc key). So I took my xbox's to a modder, he did all the work, cloned the hard drives, copied the keys etc.

Both xbox's now had identical hard drives, and hdd keys, and most importantly, all the saves worked. Now both xbox's 1.6 and 1.6b and are unmodded (as far as I know), so how did he achieve this if the eeproms are supposed to be unchangeable? Configmagic from what I have read, can do it, but if the eeprom is supposed to be unchangeable, then how does it work? Is there a softmod or something on the hard drive that has a separete eeprom that overrides the main one?

This has always baffled me, I must admit I do not know very much about modding and I may have my facts wrong.I am also unable to contact this modder to ask him what he did, I just told him what I wanted and he did it. I do remember him saying something about an algorithm he used, but thats about it. I guess I should have inquired more at the time. The eeprom is on a small writable chip near the clock capacitor on a v1.6+ Xbox and it's just above the TSOP chip on all other versions. ( it's near the LPC ) Configmagic allows you to edit the eeprom on the Xbox and change certain things, but it's advised not to change anything if you aren't sure what you're doing. Also the person done one of two things.

Softmodded the Xboxs and used the dumped eeprom.bin from your main Xbox to flash to the new one.( since they were both v1.6 it's straightforward as they use the same eeprom key ) Used a modchip and done above. ( solderless or they soldered an LPC header ) There is also a third way, eeprom reader.Modifying your eeprom does not require any soldering or modifications beyond modding it. It can be done from a softmodded Xbox or one with a custom bios (modchip or TSOP flash). The outcome is the same.If you know the HDD key you want to use, you can enter it in manually using configmagic. You can also backup and restore eeproms but I haven't ever needed to do that and cannot attest to the compatibility between console revisions.

Rocky says it's fine and he'd know as well as anyone whether that's a good idea or not.To put it simply, run configmagic on both Xboxes. Back up both eeproms and move the backups to a computer for safety. On the Xbox you're copying your HDD key TO (not from), run configmagic and press the Start button on your controller and select 'unlock hdd'. Then choose 'edit eeprom on the fly'. Next move down to the HDD key field and enter in the same HDD key as the Xbox you're copying the HDD key FROM. Select 'update eeprom'. Select 'load the eeprom'.Select 'lock hard drive'.

Your eeprom and hard drive now use the same key as your other ('from') Xbox.Keep in mind, when changing hdd keys as you know, it may invalidate game saves. Use with caution. I'm not sure but you might be able to copy them to a memory unit and then back after changing the key. On a related note, this is something I do to every Xbox I own.I set the drive key to be all zeroes for all of my xboxes. Makes things much easier. See the link in my signature for details.

I cloned a HDD from a soft modded machine and then soft modded another machine and want to put the cloned HDD on that one. Thanks for you help. You should have backed up the EEPROM when you softmodded. There usually located in E:Backups or E:BackupSo what you do is downloadGet your eeprom.bin from the Xbox you want the new HDD in, put it in the E: partition on the Xbox you cloned the drive on and locked it to. (Note the eeprom.bin must be all lowercase)Now install Chimp 261812, just copy the content of the E partition folder to E: now swap the slave drive like you normally do & load chimp 261812, you will get IO errors because the HDD is locked don't worry about it, when you get to the chimp menu select option 3 option 2 option 1 to unlock the slave drive. Now you want to lock the slave drive using the eeprom.bin located on the E partition.

So it's option 3 option 1 option 3. This will use the E:eeprom.bin to lock the slave drive. Now you can stick the new drive into the other Xbox. I just want to make sure I know the proper order.

In order to use the cloned hd that is full of game rooms I need to first transfer the eprom.bin from the small hd in the modded xbox. I am going to transfer this eeprom via FTP with my laptop. Then boot my xbox with the fully cloned hd in it and transfer the eprom.bin from my laptop via FTP to the cloned hd.

Then lock the cloned hd with the eprom.bin from the xbox I want install it in? Also if I put the eprom.bin on the E: drive will I be able to use the cloned hd in both consoles? Meaning if I continue to place eprom.bin files on this hd from different soft modded consoles I would be able to swap this cloned drive in and out of any consoles I transferred the bin files from?
